A World at War
Our world is carrying an unbearable weight. Across regions and borders, we are witnessing profound suffering—lives taken, hundreds of thousands displaced, entire cities upended by militaristic diversion tactics, resource grabs, and the relentless pursuit of power.
The Russia-Ukraine War continues to devastate cities and families. The Israel-Hamas War and the broader Iran-Israel conflict, alongside the bombing of Lebanon, have deepened the humanitarian crises. The Sudan Civil War has displaced millions. The Myanmar Civil War plods on with terrifying consequences. Across parts of Africa, insurgencies and instability persist, often underreported, yet profoundly felt.
Billions and billions of dollars are wasted on destruction. Global economic systems strain under the pressure while climate change escalates. As is so often the case, at the center of it all are the innocent caught in the crossfire.
The cause, breadth and depth of these conflicts is all deeply upsetting - overwhelming even. For my own sanity, I must return to solution.
Meeting War with Action and Inner Peace
Right now, perhaps we can all take a minute to pause.
A quiet moment to acknowledge those who are suffering, grieving, displaced, disappeared. Sending our concern, our care and our consideration.
Together, let’s take a breath.
Feel our feet on the earth, the breath in our lungs. Inhaling. Exhaling.
And then, when you’re ready, let’s begin again. Let’s keep fighting the good fight . . .
Cultivating Peace in Times of War
Continue engaging your civic voice. Call elected representatives, write letters and postcards, and advocate for ceasefires and humanitarian aid - these are not empty gestures. Research shows that constituent communication remains one of the most influential factors shaping legislative priorities, particularly when it's organized and sustained.
Show up physically. Peaceful demonstrations and marches have always played a role in shaping public discourse and policy. The US Civil Rights Movement and global anti-war protests have consistently demonstrated that sustained, nonviolent collective action can shift the dissemination of media and change political policy and decisions.
Be mindful of your money. Consciously divest from industries that profit from war—like defense contractors—and reinvest into community-based, regenerative, and peace-oriented initiatives. Economic pressure influences corporate and governmental behavior, particularly when enacted at scale.
Donate. Reputable humanitarian organizations provide food, medical care, and sanctuary. Even small, consistent contributions, when multiplied across communities, create significant impact.
Stay informed. Support independent journalism, engage in nuanced dialogue, and resist oversimplified narratives to counter black/white polarizing stalemates.
These actions—our voices, our presence, our resources—matter. They ripple outward.
. . . and . . . Let's also turn inward.
Cultivating Inner Peace
Practices like meditation, vagal toning, and prayer significantly regulate the nervous system. They reduce stress, increase heart rate variability, and enhance emotional regulation. Studies show that consistent meditation can decrease reactivity and increase prosocial behavior.
Promising studies—such as the Maharishi Effect research—suggest correlations between large groups engaging in collective meditation/prayer with reductions in crime rates and violence in surrounding areas. While these findings are debated, they highlight a tangible relationship between collective consciousness and social coherence.
Fact: regulated individuals are less reactive, less stressed, and more capable of empathy, discernment, and wise action.
In a world on the brink, these qualities matter—profoundly. As above, so below. As within, so without.
So, please, let’s together:
-Take action in the world—through our voices, our communities, and our resources.-Tend to our inner landscape—cultivating steadiness, wisdom, and compassion.
When we act from a space of clarity and connection, we contribute in grounded and life-affirming ways. Each moment of awareness matters. Each act of care matters. Together—through action, intention, and collaboration—we participate in shaping a world that, even in the midst of war, remembers its capacity for peace.
